The most expensive mistake with a cracked iPhone is repairing it before selling it. It feels like the responsible thing and it usually loses money: an official screen costs more than it adds to a buyback offer, and an unofficial one can leave the phone worth less than it was cracked.
That last part surprises people, so it is worth explaining. A third-party screen means the phone permanently reports an unknown part in Settings, often loses True Tone, and sometimes loses Face ID. A buyer can see all of that, and prices it as a phone somebody has been inside. An honest crack is a known quantity. A cheap repair is an unknown one.

What actually moves the number.
Whether the glass cracked or the display died
These are different faults with different prices. Glass you can see through with a working image underneath is the cheap version. A screen that is black, showing lines, or has a spreading ink-like blot has failed at the panel, and that costs more. Look before you tick.
Whether the drop took Face ID with it
A hard enough impact can break the Face ID array, which is one of the more expensive things to go wrong on an iPhone. Test it before you send it: if it will not set up, say so, because it is a real deduction and finding it during testing is what changes a quoted price.
Back glass is not the cheap one
People assume the back is trivial. On recent iPhones it is laminated to the chassis and is often as expensive to replace as the front. Declare it separately rather than lumping it in as a scratch.
Everything else still counts
A cracked phone is still priced on its model, storage and battery health. A cracked 15 Pro Max is worth considerably more than a pristine 11. The crack is a deduction from a number, not a replacement for it.
